Execution / Routing
DMA trading in FX: what direct market access actually changes
DMA means your order reaches the venue’s market instead of a price the broker decided to show you. In an over-the-counter market like FX that is not a small detail — it decides what you pay, what you can trade, and whether a short-horizon or algorithmic strategy has any edge at all.
What direct market access means
Direct market access is execution in which your order is routed to the liquidity provider’s market rather than being internalised by the broker. It is standard in equities and futures, and in FX it exists through DMA and ECN routes that sit behind a FIX API connection.
The practical difference is what happens between your decision and your fill. In a dealing-desk model the broker may hold the other side, so your profit is their loss and the incentive runs against you. In a DMA model the broker routes and charges a commission; your P&L and their revenue are not in conflict.
Dealing desk
The broker may take the other side of your trade. Pricing, requotes and rejections are commercial decisions as much as technical ones.
Market maker / STP
Orders are passed upstream, but the feed and the routing rules are still the broker’s. Execution is better; it is not the venue’s market.
DMA
Orders route to the underlying market over an API, priced from the venue’s liquidity, with commission as the broker’s revenue.
Why FX is different from futures
FX and spot metals are over-the-counter. There is no single central exchange to anchor one official price, so the market is a set of competing liquidity pools. The industry’s own conduct standard, the FX Global Code, exists precisely because of this structure. Two consequences follow, and both matter to how XTRSK trades:
There is no “the” price
At any instant there are several valid prices, depending on which pool you can reach. Routing, not just speed, decides the fill you get.
Prints can be displaced
Because pricing is quote-driven, a swept level, a stale quote or a thin moment can leave a print away from where the market really is. That is the opportunity NIC-X is built to take.
Cost has to be modelled
Spread plus commission plus slippage is the real cost of a round trip. A strategy that ignores it will look profitable in a backtest and lose live.
What DMA changes for a short-horizon strategy
A strategy that holds for seconds or minutes lives or dies on execution quality rather than on prediction. DMA is what makes that quality measurable and repeatable — and it is the difference between an HFT system and a fast-looking expert advisor.
Deterministic fills
Fill-or-kill routing means a stale price is rejected instead of filled badly, so the edge is not quietly eaten by slippage.
Measurable latency
Direct routing removes the bridge, so the time from decision to acknowledgement is something you can instrument and improve.
Consistent sizing
Because the cost of a round trip is known in advance, position size and stop distance can be set from the actual cost floor.
In practice DMA is delivered over the FIX API: the venue’s gateway speaks FIX 4.4 and your connector speaks it back. That is why the two subjects belong together — DMA describes where the order goes, FIX describes how it travels.
Colocation, latency and where the cost hides
DMA removes the broker’s markup, but it does not remove distance. An order still has to travel from your server to the venue and back, and on a fast strategy that journey is part of the cost. This is why DMA deployments are co-located: servers placed in the same facility as the liquidity they trade, typically LD4 or LD5 in London or an Equinix site in New York.
The second hidden cost is slippage: the gap between the price you expected and the price you got. On a DMA route with fill-or-kill orders, that number is small and measurable. On a route that always fills, it is invisible and compounding.
Commission is visible
You pay a stated fee per lot instead of an embedded spread. Bad for marketing, good for arithmetic.
Spread is the venue’s
You see the market that the liquidity pool is quoting, not a retail-ised version of it.
Slippage is yours
With DMA and FOK, slippage becomes a decision you can refuse rather than a tax you absorb.
Algorithmic trading and DMA
Algorithmic trading over DMA is mostly an operational discipline rather than a modelling one. An algorithm that cannot cancel precisely, cannot confirm its own position, or cannot decline a bad price is not really trading — it is submitting suggestions. DMA plus a FIX connector is what turns a model into an execution engine.
Cancel/replace
Pricing moves; a working order has to move with it or be pulled. That requires an API, not a chart.
State certainty
After a disconnect, an algorithm that guesses its position is dangerous. Reconciliation is a feature, not a detail.
Cost-aware sizing
When the round-trip cost is a known number, position size follows from the edge rather than from habit.
How XTRSK routes
XTRSK runs its systems over FIX 4.4 with DMA-style routing and reviews the venue, the broker and the server location against the strategy before an account goes live. PULSE-X is the high-frequency system; NIC-X trades displaced prints. The live account is published so the execution result can be checked rather than taken on trust, and the research behind both is described on the quantitative trading page.
DMA questions
Is DMA the same as STP or ECN?
They overlap but are not identical. STP means your order is passed upstream; ECN means it can interact with other participants; DMA means it reaches the venue’s market directly, normally with commission-based pricing.
Does DMA guarantee a better fill?
No. It removes an incentive conflict and makes the fill measurable. Whether it is better depends on the venue, the route and the strategy.
Why does colocation matter for DMA?
Because the order still has to travel. Co-locating in the same facility as the liquidity removes physical distance that no amount of software tuning can recover.
Can I use DMA with MT4 or MT5?
Some brokers bridge MT4/MT5 into a DMA venue, but the platform usually reintroduces delay and an opaque fill. A FIX API route is the direct path.
Is DMA only for large accounts?
Not inherently. Access is more about broker approval, account type and jurisdiction than about size, though minimums vary by venue.

Leveraged FX and metals trading can lose money quickly. This page describes execution and routing; it is a technical note, not a recommendation, and direct market access does not reduce market risk.
